It Is Time To Be Irreplaceable (Final Paper)

My strategy to develop a personal brand for myself to better my future is quite simple actually. I plan to use social media techniques specifically like:

TWITTER

FACEBOOK

YOUTUBE

LINKEDIN

WORDPRESS

These techniques will gain me contacts and advertisement. They are all able to be personalized and helps let your audience really begin a relationship with you and what you post.

Not only will I use these techniques to create my network and personal brand, but I will use what I have learned in the past about myself to increase my chances of standing out in a group of other college students looking to find a career and bright future. I will use past and present experiences, as well as three quotes I have always tried to live my life according to.

“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”

-Coco Chanel

“Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love.”

-1 Corinthians 16:13

“If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.”

-Frank A. Clark

Create my name by these rules and I will achieve the personal brand that will enhance me, and find a demographic interested in what I have to offer to the community.

CHEAP & EASY WAY TO HIDE YOUR CLOSET

Have you ever had to deal with those frustrating sliding doors on your closets? I know I have, and I HAD to get rid of them. On a small budget, there were not many options, but I made do with what I had.

My Freshman year of college I had a Twin size bed, and now I have a Full. I still had my sheets from that bed so I decided to use them as curtains to cover my closets. Here is what you need:

– Sewing Utensils (sewing machine or by hand)

– Tension Rods

– Nails

– Ribbon

Step One: Find the top of the sheets, where the seam is. You are going to have to undo the seam UNLESS it fits around the tension rod that you bought. It really depends on the size of rod.

Step Two: IF it does not fit, then release the seam and make it a wider hole.

Step Three: Measure the height of your closet doors. If the sheets are too long once hung, you are going to have to trim and seam up the ends. It is really simple. Cut the sheets to the length you want (they should BARELY touch the ground). Then fold over the cut end and sew it down.

Step Four: Hang them and nail a nail into the sides of the doors evenly so you can tie them back with ribbon!

**My curtains are too long, so they hang down more than yours should.

Curtain Toppers & Renewing In-Tables Video Blog

This video blog goes through step by step of 2 different projects I have done and would like to share with you guys! I have a tendency to talk fast, however, I explain each step very clearly. Each project took me no more than an hour or two to do, and I spent almost nothing for both of them.  HINT: ALWAYS TRY TO FIND THINGS LAYING AROUND YOUR HOUSE, BE INVENTIVE, BE CREATIVE. The finished projects are below:

Remix Manifesto! Copyright Laws – right or wrong?

Girl Talk! A man who is changing the world of Creativity as we speak.

He is breaking Copyright Laws left and right. Why hasn’t he gotten caught yet? Because there is now a line between if Copyright Laws are good or bad for our community, our culture, and our future. They say that they are trying to protect Creativity with Copyright Laws but really they are just limiting future Creativity from ever growing. So the question is – What is the next step for Copyright Laws? Or for Girl Talk? When is the line between limitations or “protecting past creativity” ever going to break through to let future Creativity flow? Anyone that listens to Girl Talk’s music would know that it is nothing other than Creative and Unique. It is a break through for a new type of music – not stealing.

I believe that Copyright Laws are hindering our future, and hindering our culture. Like the video had stated, the world needs to SHARE, COMMUNICATE, and TRADE in order to better our future. The one point in the video that really stood out to me and made a point to me was when it discussed Cancer Research. Imagine a world of scientists trading information and research that could ultimately help discover a cure for Cancer. Simply adding one set of research to another could possibly solve the formula that we have been so longing to figure out! Ironicly enough, Girl Talk is doing that very same thing. Adding other “research” (music – genres – culture) to a future culture, a future genre of music to discover something incredibly unique.

So tell me, what is wrong with this? What is so wrong about being Creative. The United States prides itself on being a free country, with freedom of speech, but isn’t “Art” a way of communicating? Wouldn’t that fall under Freedom of Speech? So by having Copyright Laws, the United States is being hypocritical against it’s very own rules, and what we are known for. Copyright Laws show the United States’ very own citizens as criminals, when really we are bettering our future and justly speaking freely.

Trends in Location-Based Social Networking

Gowalla. A location-based application for computers, phones, etc. It uses the GPS services to locate you and what places are near you. The benefit of this application are such things as “virtual gifts.” Sort of like the ones given out on Facebook for people’s birthdays. One of the panelists from One Taco used this idea to promote his company. For instance, Gowalla purchased tacos from One Taco and spread them around Austin. When someone would check-in around one of the locations with virtual tacos, then they would be able to redeem the taco from the actual company. It got One Taco tons and tons of business helped it get its name out there greatly. Other people that contributed to the discussion were people and users of Gowalla and IncSlingers, Powered as well.

Trends in Online News

The panelist from the Austin-American Statesman, began the session by talking about how they use social network systems to interact with their readers. Twitter helps the Austin-American Statesman to connect with the community and give breaking news on an “as soon as possible” basis. For instance, I had learned about the shooting at the University of Texas campus from the Austin-American Statesman Twitter, and as well as many of my friends’ Twitters that go to UT. Many other social networking sites were mentioned, however, Twitter is the most used and most effective. The panelist from the New York Times discussed a couple of her projects that she felt made the news more interesting and interactive. The project that stood out most to me, besides the Puppy Diaries, was the “A Moment In Time” project. It was for people all around the world to take a picture all at the same time and send them into the Times. The turn-out was ridiculous and more than she ever expected. The last panelist was from The Texas Tribune discussed how someone can use charts and maps for useful news. He used Mack Brown as an example of this. The discussion was VERY interesting and it was neat to see how Twitter and other social networking sites really have helped the news.

Social Network Movie

I went to see The Social Network this weekend and was pleasantly surprised. The movie was fantastic! However, I know that a lot of it was not true, which sort of disappointed me. It was said that Mark (Founder of Facebook) donated a lump sum of money to make up for the portrayal of him in this movie. He believed it made him out to be an ass and he did not want people to see him that way. All in all though, the movie was very entertaining and very interesting to find out how it all started. Something that we use every single day, and continue to be addicted to it.

BOBCAT PARKING IPHONE APPLICATION

What It Does: When you are running late for class, this application can show you what parking garages actually have parking spots availabe and which are full before you actually go to them. It also will calculate, after parking, how long the walk is from that garage to your building.

How To Use It: Simply download the application and answer its questions. It will need to know what time your class begins, where the class is located, and what type of parking sticker you own.

One Man’s Trash, Another Man’s Treasure!

As a broke college student, I get a lot of hand me downs. For instance, my roommate and I got all of our furniture for free. No, they are not the nicest things, but they were FREE! So we decided to deal. However, this one coffee table in our living room I could not almost bear to look at. It had gorgeous potential, but was beat to a pulp. Tons of water damage and scratches. It was terrible. So I decided to paint it and make it look fresh and new!

What You Will Need:

-Sandpaper

-Paintbrushes

-Paint (that will work on wood – that is glossy)

-Paint tape

-Washcloth

Step 1: Sand every surface you plan on painting really well. Make sure and wipe the grit and dust off! Then wipe it down again with a damp towel and let it dry.

Step 2: Tape off the edges where you do not want the paint to seep through.

Step 3: Look at the way the wood grain runs. ALWAYS paint along the wood grain.

Step 4: Start painting! You will honestly need 6 to 7 coats. But between each coat, let them dry completely or your finished product will be sticky.

Step 5: After done, remove tape and use the damp washcloth to remove excess paint from the edges.

Step 6: IF you want to stain the rest of the table, and easy stainer is just brewed Coffee!
